Chemical reactions occur when two reactants (substances that can react) are combined. There are many types of reactions. For example, the process of creating food in plants is a chemical reaction. It is called photosynthesis.
How do we notice a chemical reaction?
Chemical reactions happen all around us so how do we notice them?

- Colour Change
- Gas being given off
- Temperature change
- Mass (or weight) change
- Precipitate form (a precipitate is when it goes cloudy)
- Smell
Some word equations to remember:
metal + oxygen → metal oxide
metal oxide + acid → a salt + water
metal hydroxide + acid → a salt + water
metal carbonate + acid → a salt + water + carbon dioxide
* When writing word equations in Chemistry, use an arrow (→) instead of an equals sign (=). This is because the reactants aren't the same as the final compound, they are a result of the reaction.
