Fun Facts: (or just facts)
- There are 206 bones in the adult human body
- The smallest bones are the stapes - three bones found in the ear.
- The largest bone is the femur
- The spine is actually a collection of vertebrae put together.
- Calcium is the mineral required for bone growth
The skeletal system has 4 functions. These are Support, Protection, Movement and to produce blood cells.
- Support is the main function of the skeleton. It gives the body its shape and holds the (vital) organs in place. For example, the rib cage and the pelvis.
- Protection is another function. The skeleton protects internal organs such as the skull protecting the brain and the pelvis protecting the reproductive organs
- Movement is a purpose because the skeleton helps bodies move by a system of joints and provides a base for muscles to attach to.
- Blood cells are produced in the bone marrow of some larger bones. It produces red and white blood cells as well as platelets. You find this in the spine, ribs, pelvis, skull and in the spongy material at the end of long bones
